Develop your confidence in supervising medical students and trainees

This online course will help you become a more effective clinical supervisor or educator. It is mapped to competences within the Academy of Medical Educators’ framework for professional development, as used by the General Medical Council and Health Education England.

You’ll improve your confidence in supervising undergraduate or postgraduate learners.

You’ll also develop your knowledge and skills in two challenging areas: how to provide regular, timely and effective feedback; and how to identify concerns around performance early, and raise them with sensitivity, tact and firm action.

  • Week 1

    Clinical supervision and giving feedback

    • Introduction to the course

      This course covers clinical supervision in the context of professional standards for postgraduate medical educators. It will also focus on two challenging areas: giving feedback and managing trainees in difficulty.

    • What is clinical supervison?

      In this activity, we will discuss the rationale and process of clinical supervision.

    • Framework of professional standards for postgraduate medical supervisors

      This section covers the seven professional standards expected of postgraduate medical supervisors.

    • Giving constructive feedback

      In the following steps we will explore the meaning of constructive feedback and the process of doing this effectively in the context of clinical supervision.

    • Giving and receiving feedback

      In the following steps we will look at examples of how supervisor feedback helped trainees to improve thier knowledge, skills and performance.

    • Summary

      In this final activity of the week, we will summarise and assess the topics covered this week.

  • Week 2

    Managing trainees

    • Introduction

      This week we will be looking in more detail at identifying and managing the trainee in/with difficulty.

    • Early identification and effective management

      In the next few steps we will look at early identification of the trainee in difficulty and learn how to support and supervise them effectively.

    • Top tips for clinical supervisors

      In this activity we will discuss strategies to help supervisors develop their confidence in handling this issue.

    • Summary

      In this final activity, we will summarise and assess the topics covered this week.
