Engaging young people in the classroom can be a challenge for teachers and teaching assistants. Secondary school students often learn differently to younger students. This can require a different teaching approach.
On this course, you will learn how to support effective learning experiences in secondary schools, exploring the different ways secondary school students learn. You will also reflect on your own values and biases to improve your confidence and working practice.
By the end of the course you should feel more confident in your ability to support secondary school students.
Welcome to the course! In your first Steps, you'll meet your lead educator and your fellow learners, and find out what you'll be learning about over the next four weeks in Supporting Successful Learning in Secondary School.
Understand more about how your values, beliefs and attitude can impact teaching and learning in school.
Over the next few Steps you'll find out how your unconscious bias may affect supporting learning in a classroom, and challenge these notions to better understand how to deal with them.
In the next few Steps you explore the use of metaphors to help you understand what type of educator you are and what skills you can develop to improve your working practices.
Reflect on the topics covered in Week 1, test your knowledge and find out what you'll be learning in Week 2.
Welcome to Week 2 where you'll explore how people learn. You'll start this Week off by hearing from students and their thoughts on school, and taking a brief look through a student's point of view in a classroom scenario.
Over the next few Steps you'll explore the fundamentals that are required for children to learn, and you'll take a closer look at the stages of development that underpin these principles.
In this activity you'll discover there is more than one way that children learn in schools.
How do students learn best? In this activity, you'll be reflecting on what you already know and what your expectations are of the students in order for learning to be successful.
